Expensive engagement rings
No one is ever looking for
expensive engagement rings.
But, if given a choice most people would rather have an expensive look but, without the high price tag. Since budgets are usually limited, it is important to reduce the cost of these rings without adversely affecting the appearance of the ring. Generally, engagement rings that have many diamonds mounted on it look more expensive than those who don’t. No doubt a large center diamond will create an expensive engagement ring. It is being aware of how to reduce the cost of the larger center diamond that allows you to have the effect of expensive engagement rings without the high cost.
How to get the most for your money
If a person is interested in acquiring a diamond of approximately 2cts it is wise to reduce the weight by 15%, and the diamond will still appear almost the same. When buying diamond, it is priced per carat weight. There is a major price jump next to the 2ct mark. Similarily, if you are looking for a 1ct, then reduce its weight to ¾ carat, and the price is cut in half. You may notice some difference in the size when doing this but in reality, you may be simply replacing a 6.5mm diamond with a diamond that measured 6mm. In this way, the appearance of the ring wouldn’t change if the ring itself remained unchanged. If the ring has a number of smaller diamonds one can do a
special order
ring made that retains the same style and same number of diamonds but reduces their total weight.
For example if a ring consist of a large number of 1/5 ct diamonds one can create a ring with 1/6th carat diamonds and substantially reduce the cost without significantly affecting it appearance.
The metal matters
Another variable in avoiding expensive engagement rings is the precious metal that is selected. There is virtually no difference in either the appearance or durability of a ring that is cast in platinum and a ring that is cast in gold. However, the price of the platinum ring will be almost twice as much as the gold ring. The platinum ring will feel heavier than the gold ring. But the
14 kt gold
ring can be made to a heavier scale and perhaps be even more comfortable then the platinum ring.
Merchants and margins
The cost of wedding rings is determined by the
gemstones
and the materials used in their construction. The margins (mark up) which the merchant must have also affect cost. Margins vary among merchants. So just like you might want to pay attention to the gemstone and materials that you decide to have in your ring, the merchant is also a factor to consider when making your final selection.
